Russellville, KY | Especially in the south end of the county, it all depends on how the rains hit as to whether the sorghum-sudangrass hybrid or the short season corn is the right answer. I planted both this time, 40 acres of a Mycogen corn to chop, planted 3 weeks ago behind cereal rye & ryegrass. I also drilled 45 acres of a BMR sudex into some ground that I had beans on last year, with the intent to let cattle graze it. Keep in mind though, I'm 100% north ground, so your results WILL differ.
I've never chopped sudex, but we did try haying it ONCE. The feed value of the sudex usually won't be as good as corn, but with the limestone ground that you're on, sudex may be the better option for this time of year. | |
