Hazelton, Kansas | Ryan,
We did an 1895 a couple of years ago (66 openers). We found this process works best as a two-man job. One under the machine with impacts and one outside to hand in tools and transfer parts.
We had to replace the main pins and bushings, as well. We took each opener apart a piece at a time, so there wasn't a lot of heavy lifting, just some contortions. The guy under the machine removed the closing wheel, closing wheel arm, firming wheel and arm, gage wheel, boot, and disk. Then back off the nut on the main opener coil spring and drive out the large front pin to release the main swing arm.
Fabricate some drivers to allow an air chisel to remove the bushings. Our biggest problem was the gage wheel arms, which used every bit of a 30 ton press's capacity.
Foam pads are a must if the guy under the machine is over 50... :-)
Do a search here. There are lots of recommendations for seals, gage wheel arm o rings, etc.
Regards.
