SW “Ohia”
School of Hard Knock,

You need a herbicide labeled for "cut-stump" application. Most foresters and vegetation management crews use Garlon mixed with a stump dye. They apply it using a 2gal hand sprayer.

How long has it been since you cut the tree? Cut-stump herbicides are only effective if applied soon after cutting before the stump can seal over. Otherwise you need to cut a thin layer off again, or treat it like a basal application.

There are multiple methods for undesireable tree control using herbicides. Foliar (spraying the leaves), basal (spraying right on the bark), hacking (chopping a notch and injecting), etc. Each method has its advantages and requires the proper herbicide before application
