You want the old yellow clay that's down under the little black dirt some places have left as a base for your shed. That's the only thing that stuff is good for.

I'd pass on the grass/gravel/dirt pile for this project.

Composting guys like 3-5' tall piles In a long line. I wouldn't buy nitrogen to add to it and would hate to waste free manure on it even......
