NEMO | We spread worthless vomitoxin wheat out last fall as a cover crop on some cornstalks. Some of it was lightly worked in and some was just left on top of the ground. Plans were to throw up a fence and graze cows this winter but that didn't happen. When fertilizing (NPK)the wheat cover this spring we got rained out. Came back later with mainly P and K. Think we got rained out again, so had some with no fertilizer. Also, worked the ground at an angle so had some comparison with vertical vs nothing and with different fertilizer comparisons.
This spring, the fertilized wheat looked really good so decided to experiment and Notill beans on 30 inch rows in May. Planned on straddling rows when combining but the back tire was going to run down a row without a lot of work, so ended up cutting at an angle.
Results: The NPK (60-40-60) wheat vertical tilled probably yielded within 5-10% of all my other regular wheat. The P and K (0-40-60) vertical tilled wheat yielded probably within 10-20%. The vertical tilled non fertilized wheat probably yielded about 50%.
The non tilled wheat was considerably less yield due to thinner overall stand, but naturally the NPK yielded more than the P&K which yielded more than the non-fertilized wheat.
