Subject: RE: Those goofy organic farmers and their weeds

North Central Illinois
I had some oats with yellow flowers like that. So, they went in a silage bag Tuesday and I put beans in Thursday. Sometimes the key is knowing when to give up. Dad didn't master that, so I have some fields with enough of a bank of velvet leaf that I can fallow till every 3 weeks all summer and have a green field every time. Those fields aren't going to be planted to beans for a while yet. I haven't even grown a new seed crop since he died in 2005 and it's still bad. He was a phenomenal cattle breeder, but not a top crop producer by any means. As a teen, I drove the combine through plenty of places where the only way I knew it was a bean field was by looking in the grain tank.

I will admit that my bean field picture is only 3 years out of conventional production with 30+ years of excellent weed control. I will try to get a picture of some longer term organic fields when I get back from vacation next week.
