Even herbicide-free, a good stand of alfalfa will be weed-free after the first cutting. You'll need to till a few times to have a nice soft bed for the seed, anyway. I wouldn't waste my time trying to find resistant alfalfa seed nor spraying roundup on anything. After you mow it once it'll out-compete most anything you might find out there.
I can't get over how different things are in different areas. even as close as 120 miles away. "Here" Alfy requires a spring app for winter annuals and at least one for annual grasses in the summer. No such thing as a thick enough stand to keep the weeds out "here". Also we want as firm a seed bed as we can get, prefer notil or the first rain will have you a field of ditches to bounce through for 4 years.
