Several years ago a horse person had some very sick horses, can't remember if they lost any. The pasture had something in it they eventually decided caused the problem. That weed had been there for decades, never bothered, but some conditions with too hot or too wet or too dry caused the horses to get sick from browsing those weeds that one year. Obviously I don't remember the details!
