Idaho | I saved my machine with a portable presurized water extingisher this year. Twice actually. Lessons learned:
Don't bungie cord wrap them to the cat walk. Every second counts. The store bought quick release mounts are much cheaper than a combine. (I can still do the ladder in two strides up and one down. I can break two new bungies with a single bound errr jerk.)
Small powder extingisher is a joke and waste of money. Only the big bottles have critical mass.
Have 6 bottles per machine. Three water and three powder. Maybe 4 and 2. There just ain't time to go to the house and refill! No kidding. Two on each end of the header. They fit nicely there. One exterior to the engine compartment and, this is the most important, one just outside the cab. The cab bottle will enable you to exit the cab and combine area and save your a.........
And I can show the scar tissue if you think it can't happen.
Wear a long slieve shirt. In the bombers we had nomex fire resistant flight suits and gloves. They work for a cockpit fire. The Captain who taught ejection seats had his hands and fore arms burned bad in an A6 because he was a "10 foot tall bullet proof Marine" with his slieves rolled up while on a mission. They couldn't have found a better person to teach that class. It doesn't have to be Nomex to provide an extra bit of protection. Burns hurt bad.
Be safe out there. | |
