Near-north Ontario, French River | Im not so sure its a good idea to fight a combine fire in the first place, mainly do to personal safety. I can understand wanting to save an expensive peice of machinery but lets face it, unless you are trained ,well equiped and the fire is small its prolly best to get the heck out of dodge and let the fire department deal with it. Most fires around here happen during the wheat harvest when things are hot , normally breezy and humidity is low. The fires I have seen the farm department was lucky to stop the entire field from burning let alone saving the machine. Ya'll know how fast stubble can burn, even on a calm day, so I'll be the first to admit if a TRUE fire ever starts (as opposed to some smoldering chaff),I'm not about to try to put it out. Ill be running for the safety of the field edge. Besides, thats what we carrry insurance for. I do like the idea of a small onboard water supply to help out smolding dust.chaff etc, or even to cool over heated bearing and its surroundings in an emergency but Im leaving the fire fightin to the pros. |
