I would let it be and see how it recovers. If you get some rain you will probably be surprised. Treat it like the rest of the field or the same as the comparison field to be fair to both parties.

Unfortunately cows do and will get out. Often times due to weather (wind, lightning, tree fall on fence). Initial reaction is usually the worst. At least the cow owner cares and is doing the right thing and trying to make it right.
