Subject: RE: Corn stalk bales

Central Ohio
This is not a situation where the land lord made a decision to go with another renter. The owner died and his land was sold to a dairy farm who needs more ground to spread manure on. I understand his position and he was willing to pay for the ground. The new owner isn't a quality individual in my opinion, but that doesn't really effect my decision.

This isn't out of spite. It is more of a learning opportunity. I haven't baled before and this will help me know how the fields look after baling and what effect on organic residue it will have. We are in hill country where no tilling has help avoid soil erosion and I am just starting out so I don't have a spreader to put the organic matter back in the spring. Also I should mention that this field is pretty flat so I am not creating a situation where erosion will occur. I am hoping to just rake and bale. Maybe that will work but maybe it will not. I just asked some questions to help figure out if this learning experiement was worth trying.

My thoughts are to fence in some corn stalks for feeder cattle and feed them thru the winter. I will use the corn stalk bales to "feed"/bed them once the corn stalks in the field are grazed. Supplemented with a little hay and grain, and hoping to see a profit on the other side. Probably only be 8 calves so I am not up to grand numbers yet, but I figure better to learn on a small scale than large.

Thanks for all the replies.
