With soybeans I would terminate the rye as close to planting date or immediately after. Planting into dead cover crops keeps the ground tacky and makes planting very difficult.
Living cover crops mellows out the soil and plants very well

It may be 'in' and a bit of a fad, but it's the real deal for soybeans and cereal rye.
