I would take a tissue and soil sample and find out exactly what is happening.
Yes to both suggestions but it will all be subject to interpretation. No finding out exactly what happened except in rare cases. Like a chem shows up that shouldn't be there at all. It will also be expensive. Someone will have to fork over hundreds of dollars for the tests.
