Subject: RE: Livestock Water System

Eastern Iowa
I've got various Ritchie, Pride of the Farm, MiraFount, Franklin, and Cobett. So here's my quick $.02:

Cobett is a terrific automatic waterer, but is not maintenance free. It won't ever freeze solid down at the valve but you do need to keep the ice off of it in northern climates. But considering it is energy free it is as close to maintenance free as I've found. Only criticism: it seems small for the number of animals they recommend for it.

Franklin makes a good valve for a tank, but I was never partiularly impressed with their tanks over the years. I like the Pride waterers but can't stand their valve assembly. Over time I've converted those Pride valves to the Franklin one.

Miraco tanks are probably what I have the most of. They are good, especially their low heat Lil Spring models. I use them in the feedlot and they give me little trouble. They use that same Franklin valve--gets a lot of water through in a hurry.

I have some Miraco energy free ones with the floating balls and they work, just require more maintenance than I would like, especially in the winter, which sort of defeats the purpose in the climate I am in. Being in Ohio, you would probably not have those issues.

Not a big fan of the Ritchie, but a lot of people are.
