Near-north Ontario, French River | Ok. Talked to chemical rep tonight at a banquet. He's saying it's actually environmental related, not a disease. Combination of large temp swings recently, droughty conditions, and the typical leaf diseases. Basically the plant ran out of water(drought), and due to usual leaf diseases ( even though they are at relatively low levels) the plants started to canabolize itself in an attempt to finish the grain. Some stems are hollow and dried right out, everything looks bleached and now the flag leafs are being canabolize do.... He predicts yield loss and potentially low test wieght. Sounds like pioneer has been hit worst, but others companies varieties have been affected also. Our typical fungicide program is just caramba at heading for fusarium. Rust showed up our area this year as well but our fields were pretty clean disease wise at heading. |
