Iowa | Just for conversation Jim I pulled up my ration. I will use the average lbs fed per day, even tho it changes from 2nd-3rdtrimes to lactation.
35lbs silage, 18lbs corn stalks and a few lbs distillers. So for your example let's say you use grass hay instead of stalks and a protein tub instead of distillers.
Using 20t/acre silage you'd need 8 acres. Not sure if your grass yields but at 4 ton/acre you'd need about 20 acres of grass. For 50 cows. If you'd use corn stalks or straw for your roughage you'd eliminate the need to bale 20 acres of grass and increase carrying capacity.
This is just for discussion Jim | |
