Subject: No-tilled corn after grazed rye in trouble

Eldridge, Iowa
My no-tilled corn planted May 15 after my cows grazed it for 2-3 weeks looks good from the road, but after digging up some plants today, the roots are all growing horizontally with very few going down yet. We could hardly get the spade in the ground. The corn is probably in the V-7 stage now. I did have a hard time planting the field as the Precision Planting Air Force could not get the planter in the ground very well on maximum settings. The stand is a little thin, but overall not as bad as it could have been. Most of the plants did come up but the stalks are thin and spindly and a little more uneven than ideal. Is there anything that I can do now to help the roots go down? Soybeans were planted there last year and cereal rye in the fall. Thanks for any ideas. I plan on chopping the field for corn silage this fall.
