Subject: corn planted 5/17/2016

Clark SD

We planted some corn into green rye cover crop on 5/17. In this field we didn't put any in furrow starter fertilizer. When looking from the end of the field there was rows of corn that was above the killed rye, and all of a sudden the plants were shorter. So i did some investigating to see what caused this to happen. It so happens where the corn was taller is where we spread some solid beef manure on 4/22. To rule out different hybrids i dug up some plants in both areas (we split the planter with 2 different hybrids) and both had the same seed color, whereas the other hybrid had a different color seed.
The taller corn was 12 inches tall leaf over, the shorter corn was 8 inches tall leaf over, both plants were in the 4 leaf collar stage.
In the first picture the corn to the left was in the no manure area and the ones to the right was in the manured area. The 2nd picture shows the taller corn and 3rd picture the shorter corn.
What caught my attention is even though this corn was planted later 5/17 it is only one leaf collar behind corn planted 5/6 in tilled soil. (maybe 3 days using current soil temps).
