Subject: RE: deer damage

North Idaho

We have a lot of elk damage, we put up a temporary "double" (2 sets of posts and wire) electric fence.

Outside strings  about 4' high and 2 or 2&1/2' high

then about 3' inside of that we put another set of Pigtail posts with  a string 36" or so. It was very effective . In fact for the first few day we would check the field and because we only had the fence 3/4 around the field we did find 6 or so elk had came in from the highway side of the field, so we chased them out of the field with a 4 wheeler. They would run full speed up to that electric fence and stop with a 4 wheeler behind them giving chase.  Took several attempts to get them through the fence. We fixed the fence and they did not bother the field after that.

The problem was we have to many fields that are attracting elk and the fences are to expensive to so we have hired a "elk chaser " to patrol the fields at night with a 4 wheeler and a spot light to keep them out , that has been effective as well and in the end not so expensive. He patrols for about 6-8 weeks as needed covers about 2500 acres of Timothy. The first week or so we see a lot of critters then they decide there is better places to be. So the rest of the time it just requires a presence out there every few nights.

Lead is effective as well.
