Pedee, Oregon | I don't farm caneberries but is not uncommon here in the Willamette Valley. You need labor, lots and lots of labor. It is the life and death of berry farmers here. Can't worry about marketing if you can't care for and harvest a crop. We do have multiple good end users/purchasers here though. Oregon Freeze Dry (MRE's), several IQF plants, several juice plants.
They do make a large gross on few acres. Our Russian Orthodox community is heavily involved in caneberries and they use it as a tool to "prove up" the large dollar amounts needed to build houses on small parcels of EFU land. | |
