Subject: RE: Steiger front and rear differential difference

SC Iowa
A ring and pinion will run either direction but is strongest running in it's designed direction and weaker running back words, this is do to the shape of the teeth.
The common Dana 44 used in the front of many 4x4 pickups is actually running back words as it was originally designed as a rear end. This makes it weaker in the front application and is why Ford came out with what is called a reverse rotation Dana 44 for their front ends, it's a little stronger.
