FSB, you are probably correct about the head pressure. If you've ever had a John Blue pump apart, they simply have little stainless one-way valves inlet and outlet--with a fairly weak spring on them.
To the original poster, changing orifices doesn't do anything relative to changing the rate. A John Blue pump is positive displacement and will just create much higher pressure to pump the same amount through a smaller orifice.
