Subject: Re: Stripper Head

Leesburg, Ohio
We have had a Massey head on our Deere combine for about 4 seasons, and I like it. I don't have personal experience with the Shelbourne head, so can't compare first-hand. The Massey was more available and cost less new when we got ours. It came from Rudolph Bros. in Booneville, Indiana...good guys.

The Massey has six rows of stripper teeth on a larger drum than the Shelb., which has eight rows on a smaller drum. The shelb. also has a canvas curtain over the top, where the Massey has steel screens...steel seems more durable, but have never heard complaints about the canvas. Have some neighbors that run shelbournes.

Our stripper teeth need to be turned over before next year...they are starting to get dull on the edges, and I think that may be contributing to higher header losses in the last year or two. We only run about 300 to 400 acres/yr thru this particular head, so we have put about 1500 acres thru a 20' head since new before needing to change teeth. I think replacement cost for a full set is about $2000 for a 20'. We'll turn them, and then replace in about two years, unless we go to something bigger in the meantime. (Its now on a 9410) So far, we have not had to replace anything else on the header...very trouble-free.

The stripper head lets us run 70-80 bu wheat at 7 mph, instead of 2.5-3mph with a conventional head, and our straw buyers really like the long straw...in fact, it often makes the difference between selling straw or not selling straw in our market, especially if the straw is even a little dark. Lots longer window for baling, also.
