How wet were you? I'd think an established field of alfalfa would have held up any kind of sprayer save for the heaviest models loaded up with 1200 gallons...

I think the advice here is good though... we had great luck smoking alfalfa kinda by accident. Had a really small patch and dad had trouble getting his chemical inducted in time so he ended up with more water than he wanted. Just went to 20 gal per acre and it was as good a kill the first trip as we've ever had.
