Central Iowa | We are primarily no-till but do conventional tillage in our bottoms and occasionally some flat upland. The conventional till corn is always more even, emerges better and has better color which is not uncommon. However, even if we touch up small areas of a field with a field cultivator you can see to the foot where we tilled the ground and where it transitions to no-till. The corn is always taller and greener and generally ahead of the no-till. So my question is what about the tillage is creating this response? Warmer soils, better early season nutrient cycling, easier early root development in looser soil? My guess is it's a combination of all of the above but the real question is can the same results be achieved without full width tillage ie striptill or different nutrient management?
