we also started doing some no-till back in the late 70's with a 7000, hd spring loaded bubble coulters, and we got a crop. But, it all depended on the year and moisture how deep it planted and if we had the furrow closed.

to the OP if your no-tilling, shoot for 2 1/2 inch deep, if your ground is dry, throw a bag of seed in your insecticide box to help with penitration.
