nw NC | If you are thinking of growing small grains for silage harvest again, you may want to consider adding some hairy vetch seed to the small grain of choice. Vetch is a legume and is high in protein . Below is link to my post of a couple days ago which has pictures of wheat /vetch mix.

If you intend to grow small grains for grain harvest at any time for two or three years in the future, then vetch would not be advisable to seed as it has some "hard seed " that remain in the soil for a couple years before they sprout. From what I understand about combining grain , one does not want any vetch in it to contend with.
