I'm of the opinion that crop removal should be a major factor in fertilizer application, once the soil is balanced by soil tests. And with the variability of soil tests, it might be that balance is only detected after several years of tests while putting back nutrients at the removal rates.

And then if the removal and replacement is based on the field average, you still have warped the good and the bad spots.

Its a tough thing to call.
