Subject: RE: Variable width plow

Plowing wider takes more power which might limit plowing in sticky ground. Plowing wider probably turns the soil better the faster its pulled. Plowing narrow takes less power but reduces the ground plowed per unit time unless you can plow enough faster..

To plow my farm with an AC 2000 plow I found 4x18 too wide and in the sticky ground the front wheels wouldn't stay on the ground plowing in 3rd gear with my gas 4020 at about 3.3 mph. I took off a bottom making it a 3x18 and then could plow in 5th gear at about 5.5 mph without quite enough torque to lift the tractor front wheels. Plowing 54 inches wide at 5.5 mph covered more ground than plowing 72" wide at 3.3 mph and the plow tossed the turned soil down fast so it crumbled and mostly leveled reducing the need for leveling with the disk. Adding a row of spring teeth to the disk cut its need for 3 passes down to two for a nice seed bed.
