You're right about that VV.  A good 5-6 inches or so stick out of the ground.  I'm not sure why they do that.  I assume it is because they can't get any deeper due to a plow pan or something but I'm not sure if that true or not??  Although the root is impressive, I am most impressed with how quickly they grow and the tops canopy the ground.  Weed control is very good with them.
