When I lived in SW Kansas it was very popular. Most ran a dammer diker that ripped and put spots for water to pool. When our water dropped below 700 gallons on 120ac circles we had to quit because we lost so much moisture it was hard to catch up.
The corn looked like crap after wards until you got water on it. Probably real dumb during ear initiation.

Most of that was on ground heavily manured that would seal off horribly.
