Any idea how many 50lb bags of sand for an 18.4-34 tire sand box?

Around 50 bags to FILL it....... Assuming my math is correct...... Roughly 29 cubic feet inside the tire. Sand weighs roughly 90LBS. per cubic foot.

Edit: Many fond memories with my cousins in the sandbox building all kinds of stuff with our Tonka dozer, articulated loader and dump trucks.

Yeah me too, scooping up the cat turds with the loader and hauling them off in the dump truck.

Need a sprayer tire. A 34 inch tire isn't much room for farming.

I had an old rusted out 6 foot stock tank for a sand box when I was a kid. Dad filled it about 2/3rds full of sand from a pit not too far away. Mom liked it because I didn't have to get into it to play with the sand.

Not sure where you're at, but here in PA we had one of those for a very short while.

Dad killed two copperheads that liked to get into the inside of the tire.

Tire gone, and Dad built a 2X6 bigger than the old JD-A tire, and 18" high. Cats still crapped in it, but the snakes left it alone.

That was in the '50's so maybe snakes have better manners now or hopefully you have no poisonous snakes in your area.

One other thought, Spend the money on "Play Sand" if you're buying something like quikrete or sakrete, it's a much finer sand that makes way better play areas.

I also have some fond memories of my brother and I playing in the sandbox. Like the time we found some neat little cardboard tubes in the garbage about .5" in diameter that worked great for culverts, our mother wasn't impressed !

Whatever you do, don't buy the bagged play sand at Lowes or Home Depot. That stuff is silica sand, extremely hazardous to breathe. There are warnings on the bag to keep it moist so the kids don't breathe the dust from it. Also check the MSDS on it:

https://www.quikrete.com/pdfs/msds-b4-playsand.pdf

This is the white silica play sand.

When I was a kid my sandbox was the top ring of a hog feeder that the trough had rusted out on and the lid to keep the cats out,was pretty simple and cheap

Thank you Oldiowa, the wife has been on me to get rid of those old feeders forever, now I can explain to her why I kept them. Love those grandkids!

Sand box? What's a sand box? I played in whatever dirt I could loosen up in the bare spots under the shade trees. Problem was the dogs always came around wanting me to pet them and they would walk through my fields and mess up the nice straight rows I had plowed. :-)

But seriously, whatever you build put a lid on it or something to keep the critters out of it.
