You hold all the cards because it's your checkbook. If you want it redone. Then stand on that. If it's wrong it's wrong. The buck stops with the general, he needs to go after the plumber if he doesn't want to take the full amount on the chin himself. It just depends on how much you are willing to stand your ground. Because, legally it's your way or the highway.
