Subject: RE: Spring calf vaccination $ /head

NE Iowa
We don't give calves any vaccinations early in summer when they are on the cow going out to grass. We give oral Calf-Guard at birth, and give all cows, heifers over 3 mos. old & bred heifers LongRange in mid-to-late May so that it lasts through the summer. Later in summer we give LongRange to the later-born heifer calves. That works great and controls our flys, they stay very fleshy, and we have very little pink-eye problems. If we do have any come out with pinkeye problems, we treat them individually with LA200 and put a patch on the eye. (We're able to get all cattle in to some working area each day IF necessary to treat them.) Last year we only patched/treated a couple eyes all summer long (we have 100 cows and 40+ heifers on grass). The bull calves don't get LongRange since it's not officially approved and we sell breeding stock, so we give them Dectomax de-wormer in July-August. Prior to weaning (August-September) we give all the calves 2 rounds of BoviShield products (BV Gold 5 and BV Gold One Shot) along with 2 rounds of Vision 7 w/Somnus. The LongRange is the largest expense, but has cost justified itself to us with the larger weaning weights and ability to replace several other fly control products since starting to use it. Cows and bred heifers get BoviShield pre-breeding vaccinations yearly. The vaccines themselves are not very high in cost - very necessary.
