Sounds like the pasture raised pork that some think is so wonderful these days. I remember the days of my dad's hogs wallowing in a mud hole that I am sure was loaded with pathogens.

Wow really that is your response, I was planning on a light hearted response like; "your beef checkoff dollars at work" or something. I felt like there was some seriousness to your comment, pork is pork, pasture or confinement we all have our place. A good healthy raised pig on dirt is the happiest pig you could ever find, even in pretty tough conditions I would venture to bet most pigs would take that life any day to confinement; but confinement pork feeds the world because of numbers and thus in necessary and good. The consumer is the driver of the market not us, some individuals can not afford a life beyond finding the best priced pork, beef or whatever animal; some care about the environment of the pig, wanting something more natural thus are willing to pay more for their pork. If it were not for such individuals many smaller farmers would never be able to compete and get their foot in the door. Both systems have a place in agriculture, lets try to work together not tear each other down.
