Helped teach some amateur radio morse code classes years back. There were some who could not hear lower frequency tones, some could not distinguish the 3 short beeps in the letter S, they said it sounded like one long dash, some said it was painful to their ears.

Have had 25 FAA 3rd class medical exams in my life time, some had hearing test, the last, the doctor talked in a low soft voice and I never had to ask him, what did you say? Guess that was his hearing test.The most painful noise for me, is the ringing of plate steel when it is hit with a heavy hammer. Can understand why many in heavy industry have hearing problems.
