I don't believe triticale is "sterile" there is a guy in Kansas that sells cleaned triticale VNS, it's been $15-17 a 50 pound unit lately but varies to market. He raises it himself and others for him and buys seed too. I saw other day I think he was trying to clean out bins of old crop for $7. The last time I bought some from him there was fair amount of rye in it.

There are protected varieties. One I bought was a beardless version. I'd like to find a beardless that wasn't protected.
