Joel, I'm sure you know by now that if they owned the property it'll be a whole lot easier than if they rented. That's where I am with my ancestors in Illinois. They rented, so it's pretty tough. We know the general area, but can't get very specific. Same will G-grandparents who went to Kansas for a few years in the 1920s...renters, so no real records. Iowa is an abstract state, so it's a bit easier here if you can get hold of those records, but it's still an uphill struggle. Good Luck!!
