Southeast Colorado | I'm a decade veteran school board member. I do not like how that system is set up...............but the theory is that the more poverty in your area............the more funding needs thrown at that school. Most lunch programs run in the red but are just a small portion of the overall school's budget. I know at our school, for every kid that qualifies for the "free and reduced lunch" economic status, the school receives about $2k more in State funds on an annual basis. I guess if you wanted to look at it more so for simple explanation..............The average kid receives $10k annually from the state to administer a public education. The way the free and reduced lunch program works, the poorer economic regions receive $11k while the richer communities schools receive $9k. You do have to admit that probably the opportunities available to wealthier people's kids.............including the help they receive at home, does give them an advantage. Now............with all that said..............I'm not so sure that the program has ever shown any clear improvement in the overall education of kids. It does however give the school system more funds to attract and retain better teachers.............which in turn, should benefit all kids both rich and poor.
