Central Ga | Here the power company is responsible for poles and wires before reaching the weatherhead on either a service pole or service on the side of a building. If you give up the three phase for now will it be as simple as reinstalling a meter down the road if you need it again? I assume the three phase line is there and it is not going anywhere, even if you discontinue the service. Mike mentioned the capability of the house loop being large enough to service the shop if you do everything on the house meter. Another twist is separating power usage and costs for tax purposes. The first questions my accountant always asks me when I give him the figure for utilities is "is any of this for your house?". All electric coops are different, with some being easier to work with than others. I recently asked my local coop about moving three poles out of my field and putting them on the other side of the county road. They started at $1500, which they said was half the actual cost. I managed to negotiate them down to $750, which I think is fair.
