NW KS/ SC ID | Hey all,
I had a few questions about power lines, and figured with little equipment talk, and more rules and regs, the cafe might be the better place to post this. If the mods feel machinery would be better, feel free to move.
We have two meters on the farm, one house meter, which has the house and the garage. Other is the shop, old shop, and grain elevator (old wooden unit we use for parts storage, never used it for grain ourselves) this one has 3 phase.
A couple years ago a storm took down a tree near the house, and consequently the power pole supporting the line from the meter pole and going to the house, and temporary repairs were made involving a tree.... dont ask. the answer involves being cheap and making the Red Green show proud...
Fast forward to present, the old pole right next to the grain elevator finally gave way thanks to weather we had recently. it is also one pole downstream of the meter pole.
So I ask you folks, is there any rules dictating who is responsible for pole replacement? I assume power company is liable for everything up to the meter, but after that, its all the landowner?
Dad wants to delete the shop meter and run everything off the house pole. In the future if we wanted to hypothetically build a grain handling facility, would we be shooting ourselves in the foot giving up our 3 phase hookup? I think the only reasoning for this idea is the 10 or 20 dollar per month "meter fee" that he wants to get rid of.
Also, if we are liable for pole replacement, who is usually the cheapest place to hire it done? will the electric cooperative work pretty cheap, or can a guy even hire them to do things like that? where does a guy even buy poles?
The previous owners kinda sucked on having powerline breakaways, the house siding got tore up when the tree fell, and there was no breakaway on the pole that failed over by the grain elevator, just splintered and destroyed the top of the pole. I assume any repairs made by a professional will have proper breakaways installed?
Sorry for all the dumb questions, but this is one area we dont know squat about so everything is new to us. :)
Any input greatly appreciated,
Thank you! | |
