Subject: RE: How much hp to pull it? & Other ripper questions

NW Iowa
I used to pull a 5 shank Deere ripper with a 1086 running 150 hp in black northwest Iowa soil but the tractor was minimal for size both physically and horsepower wise. I tried to keep it at 12" depth but I am sure it varied as I went across the field. A 1086 compares to a 4440 but I'm sure a 4455 is more tractor than a 4440 though I have never driven one. Now if I do use the ripper it is with a 4650 Deere. There is a big difference between the two tractors size and weight wise. The 4650 has a little more power but the big difference is the sheer weight of the tractor gives the 4650 a big advantage. The Deere doesn't shake and jump and jerk like the lighter weight 1086 acted. I put this ripper behind a 220 HP 4wd once and sank the ripper down to 17" in a field I thought needed to be loosened up. Next spring in that field I had a bunch of wash ins all in a row where I had taken the top off a tile Line. The landlord got some tile replaced for free on that one.
