I have never-ever considered strapping down loaded seed bags in my life. But, there probably needs to be clarification. Loaded how? Stacked loose? or stacked on pallets? or what. Every day that goes by makes me long even more for the "good old days". I wish you younger guys luck with life...you'll need it. Re. SMVs...what's the law in IA for displaying SMVS.....on mail box posts? Wouldn't that be DOT jurisdiction also?
Ron-
Were they seed bags or boxes? Locally, I've seen boxes stacked on a trailer with no straps. I don't worry about a 50# bag falling off the side when meeting them, but a box???? That's some serious weight.
SMV signs- Can only be used when towing below a certain speed (IIRC, it's 35 mph max speed). Also, floatation type ribbed implement tires can't be towed above the rated speed of the tire, most of which are stamped 25 mph.
The following isn't directed at you, Ron.
Someone above made the comment about "implement of husbandry", assuming an exemption from lights. Wrong. Any farm implement is required to have working tails and hazard lights, day or night. Too many "experts" comment without knowing what the law is.
Around here, the DOT officers do their job, but use some restraint, as long as it's not blatant. And as long as a person doesn't go ballistic on the officer. I've been stopped by DOT before (and yes, got a few citations), but both parties were civil about it, and it always went smoothly.
The problems start when some guy decides that he doesn't have to observe any restrictions because it's "go time".
The problem with this thread is that there is a lot of second and third hand information given in the original post and a few replies (a guy told me that his buddy said.....). May be legit, but it's only one side of the stories, and does not convince me that they're all completely accurate or honest. Stories tend to get embellished to portray the teller's side in a favorable light.
