Heavy trucks use certified engines for EPA regs versus cars which use certified engine/chassis configurations.

Im not 100% up to speed on the actual laws, but AFAIK you wouldn't have to put the original engine back in to sell it. It's illegal to sell an engine or engine/chassis configuration that's been modified to the extent it alters the emissions, however you wouldn't be altering the engines emissions so it should be legal but I could be wrong.

I haven't read all of the EPAs proposal, but I'm guessing the salesmans 2017 number has to do with Phase 2. AFAIK nothing is set in stone yet about gliders and such.

It would take some serious work to get a mechanical engine to work with the new dashes in many trucks, slightly newer electronic engines can be somewhat easier, Mawk may have a solution.
