If you are making dry hay that has been laid out with a tedder you may want to go for the side discharge. Otherwise you will not be able to turn over the line of hay at the center of the raked windrow. Sweeping it all to the side it at least gets picked up off the sometimes damp ground and fluffed up. Leaf loss will be a bit higher as someone else stated.
