Subject: RE: Alley scale or scale under chute?

We operate The Cattle Scales Store (CattleScales.com) and are a Top 10 Tru-Test Distributor for North America. We also develop the CattleMax software. We've helped hundreds of producers get setup with Tru-Test scales.

If you are weighing in an alley, you want to make sure the ground is flat and hard. If the ground is uneven or too soft, you could have problems getting an accurate weight. The load bars bolt to the platform's pre-drilled holes and generally stay attached, though you can easily unbolt them if you need. You can leave the platform and load bars outside or bring them back to the barn.

If you are weighing under a chute, you will be bolting the load bars in to concrete, so they shouldn't be under water just as your chute would not be under water. These load bars are a "permanent" installation in that they are bolted in to the ground and to the chute. They are meant to handle the weight of the animal + chute and to be outdoors all the time.

Unlike a lot of the multi-purpose ag scales that are designed to weigh anything from feed to animals to trucks, Tru-Test scales are designed specifically for weighing livestock in working pen conditions - wind, rain, heat, cold, etc. The load bars are moisture-sealed so that shouldn't be a problem.

The blue cables are permanently attached to the load bars and screw in to the load bars (by hand, no tools required). I highly recommend taking your indicator inside after weighing... to protect it from the elements and also because it is a high value piece of equipment that may walk off :)
