Middlesex County, Ontario | My local university has a machine shop and electronics shop. They are real shops, not student shops, that take in outside jobs. I assume every university that offers engineering programs has such shops.
The people there are used to "uneducated" people coming in. By uneducated I mean they aren't going to scream at you for not knowing how to create a properly dimensions and toleranced blueprint. They deal with people that have ideas and rough sketches, but don't know how to proceed further. I work in the machine shop side of things, but do have an education in the electronics side as well. We sit down with people and finalize their design, then build it. A lot of our jobs are creating special lab equipment (for campus and other companies) and student projects, but we take in outside projects as well. I know the electronics shop does the same thing. Shops like this don't do production runs, just small jobs.
I guess you could try your closest university and see if they have such a shop?
