I was responding to Galaxy's numbers. Obviously RE tax portion of cost to raise a cow/calf pair for a year will vary widely from place to place. It is not obvious that even in what seems to be a relatively low cost western area, a RE tax of even just $4/acre is a considerable amount when it takes 25 acres/pair, counting grazing and hay ground, to feed a pair for a year. $100 ($4/a x 25a) RE tax is just one of the costs that need to be covered by the sale of that cow's one calf each year. Just another cost of doing the cow/calf business that the selling price of that 5 wt calf needs to cover. Nice pic of the BWF calf! I'm still working on building a herd of Hereford cows but will try a black bull on them someday. Good luck with the rest of your calving, Macttle. Hopefully this first one is a good sign.
