Subject: RE: backwards calves

WY, OK

Pretty hard without any real info.

Always cup the feet if they are back so you don't tear the cow up, that can kill a cow.

You have got to have pullers no other way to get most backwards calves out.

As soon as the tail is close to cresting run your hand over the rear to make sure everything is sliding good, same goes for the head for that matter.

As soon as you are at the tail it needs to be out ASAP.

We always hang them no matter how fast they came out, the cow pushing usually forces all kinds of crap down them.

I've never had one hip lock on the shoulders but twisting is always the way to break a hip lock loose, take on foot and pull it across the body to the other side, thus twisting the calf.

Might not hurt to learn how to do an alcohol block in the tail to get the cow to quit pushing, really helps if you have one or both feet back and need to push the calf back in to get the foot/feet up.
